CEMCA Skillfest 2023: A one-of-its-kind online skills competition by CEMCA and NSN

CEMCA Skillfest 2023Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA) regional centre of the Commonwealth of Learning (CoL) and National Skills Network – NSN, India has launched a one-of-its-kind online skills competition, CEMCA Skillfest 2023. 

The competition invites participation from 8 Asian Commonwealth countries viz, Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, India, Malaysia, Maldives, Pakistan, Singapore, and Sri Lanka. Read more…

Skill development news from the government

  • To assess the basic Reading, Writing, and Numeracy skills of the neo-literates, the New India Literacy Program held the Foundational Literacy and Numeracy Assessment Test in ten States and UTs across the country.
  • The Ministry of Education has invited suggestions on Draft National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for school education.

Skill development news from the industry

  • NAASCOM Foundation and Open Text (formerly known as Micro Focus) collaborated to provide digital skills training to youth and help them secure better livelihood opportunities.
  • To develop the National Skills Academy named as the “Maharaja Kirit Bikram International Centre for Innovation & Skills Excellence,” NSDC has announced a trilateral MoU with the administration of TTAADC and Medhavi Skills university.
  • To provide upskilling and micro-entrepreneurship opportunities to more than 1 lakh learners in the green energy sector, NSDC and Fenice Energy have signed an MoU.
  • National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Ramagundam in association with Deepthi Mahila Samithi to provide a three-month computer training to 50 unemployed youth.

  • To upskill the employees of its member companies across India as well as to train and onboard 45,000 employees for the industry, FFFAI collaborates with 21CC Education within IIFF.
  • Redbird Aviation has inaugurated its fifth flight academy at Belagavi, Karnataka. The affiliations of Redbird Flight Training Academy include accreditation with NSDC, AASSC, and Airbus Industry as a training partner.
  • B&WSSC launched the ‘Skill-Gap Study’ at “Bridging the Skill Gap, Beauty-Fully” event with insights into the requirements of skilled workforce across the sub-sectors till 2030 through KPMG.
  • At the 10th International Abilympics (Olympics for skill competition), held in Metz, France, Shamim Alam of the ATDC Patna Center won the Bronze Medal in the Tailor Category.
  • NSDC partnered with SpeakIn to provide a program of 12-live-learning sessions delivered to upskill students and corporate professionals over the year.

Skill development news from the ITIs

  • ITI and polytechnic students to be part of Naan Mudhalvan scheme from 2024, this will provide industry exposure and offer communication skills.
  • ITI Doda and NHIDCL partnered to organise a short-term course on Modern Tunnelling Techniques, which aims to enhance the skills of the youth and help them earn a livelihood.
  • ITI Kishtwar is organizing a six-day MS Excel and Python digital skills training. Microsoft and the Ministry of Labour and Employment will certify candidates, and acquire career guidance and placement opportunities.
  • Students from 50 ITI’s under Indore division to get trained for technical services and acquire international placements to prepare them for skilled workforce for the outside market.

Skill development news from the academia

  • UGC to announce guidelines for setting up foreign universities in the first week of May, this will help students to develop collaborative research or academic activities with foreign students.
  • M Square Media (MSM) aims to assist more than 10,000 Indian students and provide support to students to more than 1,200 universities in the US, Canada, Australia, and the UK.
  • With the support of ESSCI and ELCINA, SEMI University, a platform offering over 360 courses for various industry employees, has been launched in India for the semiconductor industry.
  • MANUU will soon begin a master’s degree in vocational courses. The university will be the first among many to take the lead in providing paramedical vocational courses at the bachelor’s level.
  • The Tamil Nadu government is in the process of revamping the existing curriculum vocational courses for Class 12 in order to prepare students to meet industrial demands. The revamped syllabus will implement internships in the coming academic year.

 Skill development news from the States/UTs

  • Haryana: For the establishment of four skill development centres in the NCR districts of Palwal, Faridabad, Sonipat, and Manesar, the Haryana government approved a total budget of 14.91 crore.
  • Jammu and Kashmir: Doda district will implement a revised skill development plan for youth, with a focus on agro-based skills, in order to provide necessary skills and better opportunities for their livelihood.
  • Kerala: Minister for General Education V. Sivankutty inaugurated the first Kerala School Education Congress, organised by SCERT at Kerala Arts and Crafts Village.
  • Ladakh: A one-day workshop on NEP 2023 and its implementation in the constituent colleges, UoL was held at Nubra as part of G20/Y20 events.
  • Odisha: To provide vocational training to school dropouts aged 17 and above, the state government intends to work with the World Skill Centre (WSC) and the Central Tool Room and Training Centre (CTTC), Bhubaneswar.
  • Tamil Nadu: The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Aptitude Test Scheme was launched by Chief Minister MK Stalin, under which 1,000 students from Class 10 will be selected annually and given Rs 1,000 per month until they graduate from Class 12.
  • West Bengal: At the second G20 Tourism Working Group meeting in in Darjeeling and Siliguri, topics such as green tourism, skill development and livelihood opportunities for local communities, and the role of MSMEs in the tourism sector were addressed.
