Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has organised a virtual workshop with Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) with the objective of engaging more than 10 lakh apprentices in the next year. This workshop was attended by CMSs, HR managers and CSR heads who shared their work on apprenticeship training and opportunities.

Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister for Education, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship

He called upon the CPSEs to explore ways to drive skill development, including adopting Industrial Training Centers, Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) in their local areas, and engage more apprentices to augment skill development efforts under the Skill India mission.

“We are rolling out the recommendations of the NEP 2020. We must create strong integration of education and skilling to create a more vibrant and versatile workforce. The nature of work is changing. We must introduce knowledge around topics like energy, sustainability, data management. I call upon PSUs too to put forward their suggestions and ideas for preparing a dynamic, progressive and modern National Curriculum Framework.”

Mr. Rajeev Chandrashekhar, Minister of State, MSDE and MEITY

“The companies should not only focus on fresh skilling but also on up-skilling, re-skilling and multi-skilling as well; so that they can easily adapt to the fast-changing nature of jobs today. Apprenticeship being one of the most sustainable models of skill development, should be extensively promoted by both MSDE and the management at CPSUs. Skilling should either be incentivised or made mandatory across direct and indirect workforce across all companies. We should ensure that our workforce is formally skilled and certified under the Skill India Mission”.

He also talked about the important role of skilling and reskilling post COVID-19.

Skill India Portal focuses towards skilling workplace

MSDE said that all companies should register themselves on the Skill India portal to ensure a single platform for data aggregation. CPSEs were encouraged to increase the number of apprentices engaged by them to a maximum of 15% of the total employee strength including staff in the current band of 2.5% to 15%.

MSDE recommended that CPSEs should support skilling workplace convergence aiming towards skilling for global requirements and also provide support to up-gradation of labs, development of infrastructure of National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs)/ ITIs/) and Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendras (PMKKs) under MSDE.

CPSEs were also asked to support and involve in innovative collaborations that will enable flow of industry-ready skilled manpower and eventually move towards hiring of certified skilled workers at PSUs and instruct sub-contractors of CPSUs to hire persons and to engage apprentices without disturbing their regular activities.
