The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET), under the aegis of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), in collaboration with demonstrated their dedication to making vocational education and skill training aspirational for Indian youth on June 26th, 2023. Through a workshop, they discussed the crucial role of Sector Skill Councils (SCCs) in creating a more effective and impactful skill ecosystem. The focus was on industry-driven training programs tailored to various sectors’ diverse needs.
A workshop was conducted in the presence of esteemed individuals such as Shri Atul Kumar Tiwari, Secretary of MSDE, Dr. N S Kalsi, Chairman of NCVET, and other key officials. The event brought together all 36 SSCs and their representatives to focus on aligning skills and qualifications with international standards.
The objective was to equip Indian youth with competitive skills for global markets and prioritize awareness and counselling sessions for long-term training programs to meet the demand for high-skilled personnel overseas. The workshop also emphasized establishing industry-partnered state-of-the-art infrastructure for new-age courses and skilling programs, integrating real-world work scenarios and industry guidance to enhance overseas mobility and improve job placements.
During the event, Shri Atul Kumar Tiwari, Secretary, MSDE, empahized the significance of public-private collaboration to fulfil Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of positioning India as a technological powerhouse. He stressed the need for a centralized and outcome-oriented approach integrating curriculum development and experiential learning, with SSCs playing a crucial role.
Shri Atul Tiwari highlighted the importance of the Recruit, Train, and Deploy (RTD) model, which provides emerging talent opportunities to upgrade their skills, receive accredited training, and enhance their employability. He emphasized the demand for trainers and assessors in the capital goods and iron and steel sectors, presenting an opportunity to develop tailored training programs aligned with industry requirements to improve youth employability. He expressed confidence that such collaborations would establish credible pathways, recognizing the value of hands-on learning and boosting youth employability.

Additionally, the Ministry and SSCs discussed a skill gap study aimed at designing appropriate skilling interventions to bridge the gap. The study covered trainers, assessors, job roles, centres of excellence, and fee-based curricula to understand the magnitude and nature of the skill gap. Findings revealed that the top five in-demand job roles for PMKVY (Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana) were in the iron and steel, capital goods, apparel, power, and IT/ITes sectors. This presents an encouraging opportunity to upskill the youth in relevant industries and enhance their employability.
