Industry 4.0 and welding technologies

The world of work is changing with automation, digitalization and other advancements in technology that are transforming various fields around the world and welding is no exception. Network Engineer, Data Analytics Engineer/Manager, ERP Manager, and API (Application Interface) Engineer are some of the job roles that are emerging in the field of welding with Industry 4.0.

With advancements in technology, with the latest tools, equipment, and safety gear, Industry 4.0 is letting the welding industry fight the “dirty job or dangerous job” stereotype.

Smart welding factories

Industry 4.0 or the fourth industrial revolution introduces “Smart Welding Factories”, in which cyber-physical systems monitor the physical processes of the factory and make decentralized decisions. The physical systems become the Internet of Things, communicating and cooperating both with each other and with people in real-time via wireless technologies.

In the smart factories of the future, individual production steps will no longer be considered in isolation, but as part of a higher-level value chain. The goal is to achieve faster, flexible, and more efficient production processes that are seamlessly integrated into one another – intelligent production, which largely organizes itself.

Industry 4.0 and welding technologies

Thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT), welding is a high-tech process that is as sensitive to the influence of processors, control systems, and software as it is to welding torches, electrodes, or shielding gas. Industry 4.0 and IoT will not only impact and improve the manual welding processes but also the robotic and automated welding processes.

With advancements in technology, tools, and equipment used in welding, there would be a significant impact of industry 4.0 on various job roles in the domain.

The welding industry would require skilled and tech-savvy employees to work with smart systems. This calls for the need of reskilling and upskilling of the existing workforce along with new skilling of the entrants into the field.

The welding industry will need an increasing number of skilled workforces, who are agile, adaptable, and have the knowledge beyond the fundamentals of welding. This will make them more employable in a competitive and high-demand industry.
