Important updates on 5G, Green jobs, Cybersecurity and more

The Information Technology (IT) sector has focused on bridging the skills gap in the country and developing programmes to boost employment opportunities for youth. The following includes the most recent technology updates, including 5G, green jobs, cybersecurity, and more.

5G, green jobs, cybersecurity

NIELIT and Microsoft collaboration

The National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) and Microsoft collaborated to provide access to skills for jobs through the CyberShikshaa and Ready4Cybersecurity programs as part of their commitment to bridging the cybersecurity skills gap in the country.

NIELIT and Microsoft will implement the CyberShikshaa and Ready4Cybersecurity programs in 30 NIELIT training centres in Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns, with a particular focus on Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and states in the North-East region of India.

The programs are primarily aimed at youth, women, and job seekers from remote areas. In the following years, these programs would be expanded to incorporate cybersecurity training programs in all of NIELIT’s training centres.

Issues facing in today’s digital economy

  • Global cybersecurity skill gap and
  • Lack of diversity in the workforce

The National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) aims to:

  • To develop skilled professionals and
  • To provide support to learners and trainers both through the design and development of curriculum and the acquisition of content.

In-demand cybersecurity jobs will be made accessible to over 3,500 individuals who complete their training. Microsoft’s support will include curriculum content, certifications, and mentorship opportunities in addition to funding for training.

Godrej and Boyce: Green jobs for youth

The Godrej Group’s flagship company, Godrej & Boyce, has been focusing on creating opportunities for the youth to take on future jobs. The organisation is dedicated to bridging the skill requirements for green jobs. By encouraging employees to create green products, offering in-house training to upskill the current workforce, or investing in increasing the skills of the country’s youth. Over the last five years, the company has trained approximately 2 lakh youth.

Digital Skills Initiative aim is:

  • To provide future skills to youth from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities
  • Train 1 lakh youths toward advanced skills in the next 10 years

The Digital Skills initiative focuses on developing skills in:

  • Automation
  • Robotics
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Internet of Things (IoT)

Telecom sector – 5G and other technologies

According to data from the Delhi-based telecom skilling body, India will require 22 million skilled workers by 2025 to effectively understand the benefits of 5G.

The telecom sector has a demand for more skilled manpower with rapidly changing dynamics. The government’s responsibility is to focus on 5G and other technologies to build the foundation of a digital economy.

At the “Telecom Vision to 5G Skilling” event organised by the Telecom Sector Skill Council (TSSC) on January 9, 2023, Department of Telecom (DoT) Secretary K Rajaraman stressed the need for imparting the “right kind of skills” and stated that “There is a need to sensitise all the state governments about the upcoming opportunities with the 5G rollout.”

According to Arvind Bali, CEO of TSSC, “5G technology is now expected to boost the Indian economy by $450 billion between 2023 and 2040.” However, there is currently a severe shortage of over 1.4 lakh workers in 5G and related technologies.

TSSC has trained more than 10 lakh candidates in a variety of roles to meet market demand.
