The second Education Working Group meeting on “Strengthening Research and Innovation through Collaboration” will be conducted from March 15 to 17, 2023 in Amritsar at the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar). The main objective of this meeting will be to identify relevant regulations and cutting-edge practices for research and innovations from the discussions of G20 member nations.

The government intends to establish stronger ties with the G20 members through this event and work together to address the challenges that individual countries face in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The discussions will also focus on methods and approaches to encourage collaboration across numerous fields, such as cooperative initiatives that could be implemented.

Participants in this meeting include representatives from international organisations such as UNESCO, UNICEF, the World Bank, and the OECD, among others.

The focus of the event will be on research and innovation as well as how collaboration affects the performance of G20 member nations. The important sessions on research and innovation will aid in reducing inequality of various kinds within and between nations, innovations for sustainable agriculture for increasing yield and decreasing food waste, the role of academia in research and innovation for affordable and sustainable energy, and innovations for industrialization that is environmentally accountable and environmentally conscious.

The discussion would help establish methods for boosting collaboration among G20 member nations in order to improve research, open access, and innovation promotion and to lower barriers to research mentoring and cross-institutional collaboration, among other things, in addition to focusing on accessing research and innovation opportunities on an equitable basis, focusing on women and socially and economically disadvantaged groups.

According to Professor Rajeev Ahuja, Director of IIT Ropar, would help to ensure a roadmap for multi-partner collaborations; to facilitate accessibility and provision of research materials; to narrow the gap between industry-academia; and, ultimately, to identify and discover relevant policies and practices for research and innovations. Under the idea of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” – One Earth, One Family, One Future – this would result in the establishment of long-lasting collaborations for equitable quality research in G20 member Nations.

The ITI is also setting up an exhibition of innovative and disruptive technologies with 100 stalls as a part of this grand event for delegates. These stalls will include startups and technologies from India and G20 member nations to gain a sense of the global landscape of innovations for the betterment of humankind.

This seminar includes participants from:

  1. Members of the G20 Education Working Group from each G20 member country, guest countries, and International Organizations.
  2. Representatives from select academic institutions in G20 member nations that are involved in projects to promote the use of digital technology for ensuring quality learning opportunities for all and enhancing learning outcomes.
  3. Representatives of India’s and the G20’s knowledge partners.

All G20 member nations have made significant progress in recent years in expanding research collaboration in order to create evidence-based solutions to specific global concerns. The remarkable advances in research and innovation must be fully utilized to transform educational systems in order to enhance learning outcomes, encourage lifelong learning, and reduce persistent learning deficits in light of SDG4-Education 2030 agenda.
