DFID, AASSC partner to strengthen skill development ecosystem in Aerospace and Aviation in India

by Brunda Murthy
March 6, 2018
in Industry, News

As one of the follow-up initiatives of the Roundtable discussion with stakeholders in November 2017, the Aerospace and Aviation Sector Skills Council (AASSC) has focused on empowering the skills of trainers and assessors in the Aerospace and Aviation sector.  AASSC, in collaboration with Department for International Development (DFID), organised Training of Trainers (ToT) and Training of Assessors (ToA) sessions in Bengaluru from 05 March to 16 March 2018. The structure and content of the training program has incorporated inputs from the roundtable discussion held with all the stakeholders in aerospace and aviation sector.

Highlights of the ToT and ToA program

  • ToT program (from 5th to 9th March 2018) is designed to equip participants with the skills to design and deliver short training sessions and become an effective trainer.
  • The training will focus on soft skills such as creating lesson aims and objectives, effective planning and delivery of training sessions, delivery of micro tech sessions, virtual learning environments, working with disability issues in classrooms, classroom assessment methods.

Shri A N Chandramouli, who is one of the Governing Council members of AASSC, representing the promoter organisation BCIC was the Chief Guest. During the inaugural address he said that each trainer will go and train more trainers leading to the multiplier effect. He also highlighted how AASSC came in to existence through the efforts of the promoter organisations. D Peter Immanuel, CEO AASSC said that even as we have a National Skills Framework and adequate infrastructure for the skill development programs across the country, non-availability of qualified trainers is a serious constraint. Programs like these are designed to make structural impact on the skill development ecosystem.

Following the ToT program will be the ToA program, which will be conducted in two phases, Phase I will be conducted from 12 to 16 March 2018, while Phase II is tentatively scheduled in June 2018. Phase I will focus on “Understanding the principles and practices of assessment”, while Phase II will focus on “Assessing occupational competence in the work environment”.

These trainings will be imparted by trainers from The Science Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies Alliance (SEMTA), UK at the premises of AASSC at Bengaluru. The trainings have been organised by DFID India ‘under its Skills for jobs project, in association with AASSC. ’Skills for Jobs’ works with central and state institutions as well as with the industry led sector skills councils. Aerospace and Aviation is a rapidly growing sector. Finding skilled workforce to service the sector is becoming a challenge. It is one of the sectors where DFID is collaborating with AASSC to share UK’s successful models on technology led training, apprenticeships and certification.
