Only 48.7% of India’s overall youth are employable, according to Wheebox’s India Skills Report 2022. This means that nearly one in every two Indian youths is unemployed. According to the study, roughly 75% of all organizations surveyed acknowledged a skill gap in the industry.
Budget 2022 prioritized skilling and skill development measures to close the skills gap and make the youth more employable. One of them is the announcement of the establishment of a DESH-Stack e-portal.

“A Digital Ecosystem for Skilling and Livelihood or DESH-Stack e-portal will be launched to empower citizens to skill, reskill or upskill through online training. It will also provide API-based trusted skill credentials, payment and discovery layers to find relevant jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities,” said Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her Budget 2022 speech. The e-portal is still under development. And the launch date has yet to be determined. We will keep you informed of any further developments in this regard.
The portal aims to provide employment assistance to Indian youth in addition to offering online skill development training.
Looking at the big picture, many experts in the skilling industry believe that the cross-skilling portal will position India as a global talent hub while bridging the country’s skill gap.
Along with the e-portal, a digital university will be built to provide students around the country with a customized learning experience and access to world-class quality universal education.
This will be made available in a variety of Indian languages and ICT (information and communication technology) formats. It will be built on a hub-and-spoke network model, with the hub developing cutting-edge ICT knowledge.
Nirmala Sitharaman also stated that the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) will be updated to reflect changing industry needs. “Skilling programmes and industry partnerships will be reoriented to encourage continual skilling outlets, sustainability, and employability,” she stated.
