Apprenticeship has, time and again, proven to be an effective solution for training and retaining world-class talent which is industry-ready. Along with enabling students to earn while learning in a workplace, an apprenticeship gives students a head start in their chosen careers. Apprenticeship is a skill-based training program wherein a person is engaged by a company as an apprentice and gains classroom (theory – 30%) learning for a short period, followed by on-the-job (practical – 70%) training. In this article, complementing the video, we discuss the two most important apprenticeship schemes in India – National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) and National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS).

Apprenticeship schemes in India: NAPS and NATS

National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS)

National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) is from the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and it was launched in August 2016. It involves basic training and on the job training.

Eligibility of apprentice training

  1. ITI pass outs
  2. Graduates / Diploma holders
  3. All pass outs from the NSQF aligned courses including PMKVY/DDUGKY etc.
  4. Dual-learning mode from ITI
  5. Pursuing graduation / Diploma
  6. Fresh apprentices

NAPS covers five types of apprentices

  1. Trade apprentices (8th, 10th, 12th class and even graduates)
  2. Graduate apprentices (Engineers and graduates)
  3. Technician apprentices (Diploma holders)
  4. Technical apprentices (10+2)
  5. Optional trade apprentices (5th class and above)

National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS)

National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS) is from the Ministry of Education. It is a one-year program which provides technical qualifications to the students. The training is provided in public sector units in the center, state as well as companies in the private sector. This scheme is only for students with technical diploma and engineering as a degree. Training is provided for about 126 subjects.

For both these schemes, students can visit the respective websites of NATS and NAPS and enroll themselves for the apprenticeship training program. Apprenticeships helps students be industry-ready and to meet the requirements of the industry and growing needs of the organization. It helps students get better opportunities and work experience of working with some of the best organisations in the country in their respective field. Along with gaining practical knowledge, students also get an attractive stipend to meet their financial needs.
