in Academia, How To's

In today’s job scenario where there is cut-throat competition everywhere, merely having a degree doesn’t help. Employers are sitting with a pile of overflowing CVs on their desks and even scoring an interview with them is a tough task. Almost every company has a minimum requirement of work experience and freshly graduated college students fall prey to this and are faced with having to underutilize their potential and join the lowest rung of the work hierarchy. Skills and work experience is what gives you that competitive edge!

10 benefits of internshipsDuring the college years, you may feel very overwhelmed with their academics and have a lot on their plate; daily lectures, college events, submissions, credit assignments, deadlines, etc. With a busy schedule like that, it is very difficult to accommodate an internship which will come with its own set of scheduled hours of work, deadlines, etc. However, it is really crucial for a student to be able to balance an internship alongside their semester academics. Yes, it is really important to score good grades but with a competitive scenario like todays, it is best for a student to have some work experience through skill development and on-the-job training as well. This not only increases your job prospects by massive bounds but benefits you in the following ways

1.Industry acquaintance and professional exposure

Internships give you the first exposure to the industry and the world of work as a whole. You will get to experience what it means to be an employee and what would the expectations from you in a job role. You will benefit immensely from this because it prepares you for your first job and tells you more about the roles available and what you could pick you, depending on your strengths and aspirations.

2.Gaining experience through skills and on-the-job training

Students that take up internships acquire well rounded experiences and get a first-hand idea of how companies work. This provides a great understanding of the business and industry in which you want to work, once you graduate. This is possible because every internship gives you an opportunity to train yourself, learn the right skills through on-the-job training.

3.Matching company expectations

Many companies expect graduates to have some level of experience, even with entry-level positions. The more internship experience you have, the more credible your background will be on your resume, this will give you an upper hand over the others while an employer is hiring.

4.Add to your resume

While it is important to do as many internships as possible, do the ones that are relevant to your degree and add theme to your resume. This provides a great footage for a job in your desired industry and will give you an extra edge over other college graduates with no internship experience.

5.Bird’s eye view

As a student, you may know what type of work you want to do when you graduate, but maybe not know what the day-to-day looks like. An internship provides a glimpse into what the work is like and if you will like it or not. Internships provide real-life exposure to the world and business even when you’re not qualified or ready to committing an entire career. You may also discover that you do not like a certain type of business and your internship may help you change directions if needed.

6.Gain confidence

As a student, you may not have the experience or even the confidence to do the job you think you want. However, most internships train college students and provide a learning experience for them to build their confidence. This confidence shows, with the claim you can make to be able to handle a job you’re hired to do in front of a perspective employer.

7.Networking

Building a network is just as important as building your experience. Internships allow students to connect with professionals that are involved in similar work. It is important to build your professional network, these connections and recommendations can be very important for you when looking for a job.

8.A valuable reference

As you build your network with the people you are working alongside in your internship, you may be able to ask them to be a professional reference. It is very important to gain feedback from your employers as companies ask for references in the hiring process. It gives them an idea of your work ethics, professionalism and ability to handle a job, etc.

9. Enhanced prospects of getting Hired

An internship sometimes results in the student receiving a job offer. If you perform well in your internships as a student, the company may end up offering you a full time job when you graduate. This not only provides an incentive for the students to do their jobs dedicatedly, but also makes it easier for the employers as they have a prospective employee who is already aware, trained and used to the functioning of the company.

10. Discover the entrepreneur in you

Internships also help you in figuring out whether you would like to work as an employee in an organization or you would like to start off as a young entrepreneur in an industry of your choice. The training and skilling equips you to understand your inclinations better and prepares you well to make the right decision.

These are a few ways in which internships benefit you. Doing internships will help you explore yourself and your strengths better. Also, if you pay attention to what kind of work you enjoy doing or not doing, it can help you narrow down job possibilities. Even if you don’t start off with a dream job, starting your career exploring as early as during college will give you a lot of time to figure out what you like doing and gaining knowledge, experience and enhancing skill in that particular field.
